When one of my friends and I decided to meet up and go Asian snack shopping, we also decided it would be a great idea to meet up for sushi beforehand! Since I wasn't too familiar with the area, my friend suggested Sushi Monster since it was close to the Asian markets were we going to shop at.
We received complimentary soup, which the waitress said was miso. Upon further inspection, it seemed more like the clear mushroom soups served at Japanese hibachi restaurants instead. Light and refreshing.
Of course, I had to order the Agedashi Tofu as our appetizer. I was pleasantly surprised at the large amount served; however, the dish was only mediocre. While the outside was lightly battered, the tofu used was not as fresh as I would like. It wasn't as bad as the Agedashi Tofu from Kyoto, but it also wasn't as good the Agedashi Tofu from Akasaka Sushi. In any case, I did have a lot leftover which I did box up to go.
On the furthest plate: The Spicy Crunch Roll and the Ben & Chase Roll that my friend ordered. She wasn't too fond of the crunchy bits on top of the Spicy Crunch roll and enjoyed the Ben & Chase Roll more, even if it wasn't as spicy as she expected.
On the closest plate: The Crazy Roll, which had shrimp tempura wrapped in rice and seaweed with salmon, and the Unagi Roll. The Unagi Roll was normal and the Crazy Roll had a nice crunch to it. I was glad that Sushi Monster didn't use old oil like Kyoto!
I would recommend Sushi Monster for both the wide selection of rolls and the reasonable prices. There was a lunch special and a sushi deal special listed on the menu as well for those interested. For Sushi Monster, it's a "You get what you paid for." type of deal. It's not bad for when you're craving sushi, but aren't willing to dish out and splurge.
