Mr. Munchimunch and I decided to celebrate our anniversary by trying out a new restaurant. What better time and excuse to splurge on a meal, right? Since we recently had an acquaintance of ours rave about how fresh the fish was at Kyoto, we were excited to give the place a try.
We started off with our obligatory order of Agedashi Tofu. The tofu used was the frozen and/or fried type and was hard and soggy at the same time. It also tasted of old oil which lead me to believe that the oil used to fry the tofu hadn't been changed for a very long time. Our appetizer was a disappointment.
I ordered the Kamo Gawa Roll, shrimp tempura topped with tuna, avocado, tobiko and eel sauce, and Shiromi (white fish) nigiri while Mr. Munchimunch ordered the Tako (octopus) nigiri. The Kamo Gawa was bland with the eel sauce being the only thing I could taste. The shrimp tempura left an aftertaste of old oil as well. As for the nigiri, my fish was far from fresh and was rubbery and chewy. I could not even finish half of one piece. Mr. Munchimunch did not enjoy his nigiri either.
Mr. Munchimunch ordered the Kinkaku, spicy salmon and avocado topped with crab, habanero masago and spicy mayo, and Kyoto Roll, fried roll with avocado, freshwater eel, seared escolar and asparagus, topped with poki, salmon, black tobiko, and eel sauce. Both of these rolls sounded appealing on paper. However, the Kinkaku roll was very bland aside from the sauce that overpowered the entire roll and the Kyoto Roll was just a large soggy mess. Neither of these rolls were finished.
Sadly, what should have been an enjoyable anniversary dinner was a letdown instead. Nothing we ordered was fresh and we left the restaurant with unsettled stomachs. Not to mention, we had to wait over half an hour for our waitress to check in on us so we could ask for our overpriced bill!
Our experience at Kyoto was not pleasing and we won't be returning to Kyoto. I definitely do not recommend this place so visit at your own risk!
